"Romeo"
(words and music by Brad Warren)
I saw a bird the other day
I had not seen since I was a child
It was a scarlet tanager
They're like a cardinal, red but more orange red
I remember seeing them in Romeo when I was a kid
Romeo where the skies are blue
Where everybody knows you
Where the carney man comes once a year
And he brings that girl ain't got no fear
She says come with me I know a place
Where we can go away from here
Just you and me and the birds and bees...
So you go down where the tall grass grows
Find out somethin' everybody knows
Back in Romeo where the corn grows tall
Everybody sees you fall
You pick the grass off your shirt and shoes
But everybody laughs at you
They say, "Romeo got some Juliet
He don't know that we know yet...."
Well let's go walking darlin', you and I
Where the summer night's like a lover's sigh
Let 'em talk all they want, we got nothin' to hide....
The carney leaves town, birds fly away
I guess nothing that sweet is here to stay
Well I left that town when I reached eighteen
Put on my boots and coat and stepped on the train
All the good things seemed to blow into town from somewhere
else
I guess I thought that's where Id go
I left Romeo where the skies are blue
Where everybody knows too much about you
Those birds come back every year in spring
The carney rolls in like a clockwork thing
And some girl makes some boy feel like a king
Cause he's finally made that brass bell ring
Cause its summertime and the lovin' is easy

About the Song:
Romeo is the town where my mother grew up, and where I spent
a little time as a teenager. The first few lines are words
she spoke to me once, and I wrote them down, knowing that
they were the germ of something beautiful. I had no idea
what it would become, I just rolled around those words about
the scarlet tanager until they grew into a story, with a
voice of its own.
